Toilet Energy

Check out this article I found in Popular Science about a student who developed a turbine that captures the energy from falling wastewater and turns it into electricty.  Now this most likely wouldn't be used for toilet wastewater due to how dirty it is, but it could be used for oter wastewater streams such as from the sink and showers in the building.  This may not be the greatest idea ever but I thought it was intesting.

  1. I like the multimeter on the wall measuring the voltage. He look's really young, which makes the invention even more impressive. I'm curious to how much noise it makes. This may reduce the desire to have it in the house. By the way, I like the use of labels. Any blog with a post about dog poop and cow pie is good in my book.

  2. The labels are a good idea...

This idea may not work great in a personal home, but if you think on a large scale (like a hotel, corporate buildings, and schools), this idea might be more effective to helping cut down on energy costs. He is definitely a young inventer, and I bet he will continue to make advancements on this product.

  3. I like the idea, but I wish there was more information about how the $1000 per year energy savings was calculated.

  4. Yes it would definitely make more sense to have these installed in very tall buildings where wastewater falling from the top floor would have much more potential energy that could be converted.

  5. Yeah, can you tell us why you think this isn't such a great idea?
